If you want to start a blog, know this: You Are Not Alone
In fact, one source reports that over 100,000 people publish a blog post each day.
I clumsily started blogging back in September of 2010, which 4 years now past, would be over 146,000,000 blog posts ago.
It’s a big, cold world out there – so this post isn’t design to help you start just any basic blog with cheap blog posts that’ll be forgotten a week from now.
This is meant to help you start a blog that will succeed quickly, earn $50,000 some day, build a massive audience, and hopefully become what you do for a living.
Step 1) Get a Domain Name
Having a sweet, well-branded domain name is the very first step to building a blog.
What is it? A domain name can be a .com, .org, .net, or whatever you want, as long as it’s still available. Facebook.com is a popular domain name. The .coms are best if possible.
Why get it? You want to have your own domain name so you can tell folks what website address to visit, create business cards, and start building SEO, which refers to how your blog ranks in Google.
Step 2) Host your own blog
Hosting your own blog is incredibly easy and means you own it 100%.
What is it? Web hosting, aka hosting, aka self-hosting all refer to the safe thing: some cheap virtual space like a garage for your car. Your blog can become your most important asset and it’s important not to store it out in the open or on someone else’s land.
Why get it? You want to have web hosting so that you can advertise, own your blog, say whatever you want, publish whatever you want, and make money without ever worrying about getting taken down. Just like your phone-bill, it’s not free, but it’s very inexpensive so you’ve got nothing to worry about.
Note: Getting 1 and 2 will instantly set you apart from over 85% of new bloggers. Fortunately you can get them both at the same time from the same place, and install WordPress too. This “place” is a web host, the best of which is called HostGator.
Step 3) Install WordPress
WordPress.org is the web’s #1 blogging software. This is not to be confused with WordPress.com, a limited introductory version which most bloggers grow out of quickly.
What is it? WordPress.org is a free and open-source software that anyone can download. That’s the bad news 🙂 But with WordPress you can build anything you can imagine online, and that’s where you stand out.
Why get it? If not because the likes of Forbes, Vogue, Katy Perry, Snoop Dogg, Time and millions of other old and new brands use it for their main websites and blogs, WordPress is a valued skill in job apps of 2014-2015 and means you know how to make a legit website, not just a blog.
