If med school isn’t quite your cup of tea, you might consider the numerous possibilities of the administrative side of healthcare. Healthcare administrators receive good salaries and have opportunities for job growth and promotions for the life of their careers.

Healthcare is a huge industry that has no foreseeable drop in the need for qualified individuals. With the growth of the healthcare industry at such epic proportions, a far broader range of jobs are now available. Although healthcare is a booming industry, it isn’t everyone’s dream to draw blood, take x-rays, or even perform an intense surgery.

There are five major administrative careers in healthcare with attractive salaries and upward mobility. If you are still trying to choose a concentration within health administration, one of the following careers might fit your interests or talents:

1. Hospital Administrators

The duties of a hospital administrator include managing day-to-day hospital operations, overseeing finances, monitoring regulatory compliance, hiring personnel and managing adequate medical staffing. This job is best suited to individuals with excellent managerial track records and business management skills. Salaries for this position depend on hospital location, size of hospital staff and the number of hospital departments to be managed.

2. Medical Coding Administrator

Medical coding for pharmacies and medical practices requires a bit of training and study, although not as intensive as training for surgeons and physicians. Medical coding is of extreme importance in hospitals, independent medical practices and in certain pharmacies. If this is an attractive position, consider a course of study online or at a local college. Generally, medical coding courses of study take up to two years to complete. Salaries start in the mid $40K range.

3. Medical Transcription Administrator

Many physicians rely on hi-tech computer devices to make notes on patients’ progress, send emails to other staff doctors and patients or reminders of special diagnoses. All of this communication requires further management by an administrator. The job pays an above average salary depending on location and volume of management responsibilities.

4. Medical Data Entry Administrators

Medical data entry administrators are charged with the duty of maintaining medical data interactively between hospitals, doctors and insurance companies. These positions are offered whenever the volume of medical data is excessive. Maintaining medical databases is part of the responsibility. Salaries average around $40K to $60K depending on location.

5. Intake and Outtake Social Administrators

Most hospitals have administrators who oversee intake and outpatient social services. The candidate for this position usually has a degree in social work and personnel management experience. Once again, the salary will vary depending on the location and amount of daily work.

As a booming industry with many needs, healthcare provides plenty of opportunities for those who are interested in non-medical positions.
