This is a guest post by master’s student and registered nurse Brian Kilpatrick.

The term “health care” is used to describe any career that provides health services to those in need. This broad term encompasses hundreds of different careers and functions, yet they all have similar benefits. These benefits make health care an extremely attractive option for graduating students and those looking to switch careers.

The Advantages of Working in Health Care

There are many positive aspects that come with working in the health care industry. Below are five advantages to working in health care not commonly found in other fields:

1. The Opportunity to Help Others – One of the biggest motivations people have for entering the health care industry is a sincere desire to help others. Health care allows you to earn a livable wage while nurturing your compassion and helping those in need. Regardless of your role, you will be involved with making sure patients receive the proper care. Even by pursuing a master degree in healthcare administration, you are prepared to make administrative decisions that will affect the level of service patients receive. This perk is more intrinsic to health care than any other industry.

2. Industry Growth – The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics has stated that every field in the health care industry is expected to grow between now and 2020. In fact, eight of the fastest growing 20 positions belong to the health care industry. As other industries lose positions, the health care industry is booming. This has led many students and professionals from all disciplines to consider working in health care. Enrollment rates in medical professional programs have skyrocketed as a result.

3. Flexible Hours – Many hospitals and health care facilities offer services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This allows employees to work different hours depending on their personal schedules. It’s also typically not difficult to switch shifts with coworkers if necessary. This allows individuals in these positions to be more active in their family’s lives, spend time with friends and pursue advanced degrees. You will be able to break out of the typical 9-to-5 mindset prevalent in other industries.

4. A Challenging and Fast-Paced Work Environment – Many professions are monotonous; they often involve performing the same tasks repeatedly every day. Although there is repetition in some health care jobs, expect to meet new challenges every day. Depending on your role, you may deal with patients or have to resolve emerging issues. The fast-paced nature of a job in health care makes a work day exciting, and time seems to fly. This could be said of few other industries.

5. Excellent Pay and Benefits – Due to the demand for health care professionals, pay and benefits tend to be more competitive than in other industries. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, healthcare administration jobs offer an average salary of $85,000 per year. The benefits package available will vary by employer, of course, but it is typically far more comprehensive than in other industries. Depending on the state, city and exact position, these jobs can pay even more. Jobs in the health care industry have varied salaries; however, they all provide a livable wage as well as unbeatable benefits.
