$30 Mac OS Mountain Lion: Worth it for Students?

Article by Ian Kar

Apple’s Mac computers have become a staple in college campuses across America. Not only do they offer academic discounts to students purchasing new Mac computers, but they have fine tuned their operating system to serve students and colleges.

Their newest installment, Mac OS X Mountain Lion, expands on these existing features. However, is it worth the purchase for a college student on a tight budget?

Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion is to be released this summer and is released less than a year after its predecessor, Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, which has introduced over 250 improvements, like Mission Control, updated multitouch gestures, and autosave. Lion has been mostly well received by critics but, according to some, feels too much like iPhones iOS, the operating system used iPhones, and the influence that iOS has on Mac’s newest operating systems is prevalent in Mountain Lion. It’s even noticeable in the marketing for the new OS; the tagline for Mountain Lion on Apple’s website is “inspired by iPad. Re-imagined for Mac.”

But before we get to the new features, its important to discuss the requirements for Mountain Lion. Not all Mac computers will have the ability to run Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion will only be able to run on MacBook (Late 2008 or newer), MacBook Pro (Mid 2007 or newer), MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer), and as long as your computer has 8 GB of free space on your hard drive. As long as your computer meets these requirements, you should be able to upgrade your computer to Mountain Lion.

So after analyzing all the features, is Mountain Lion really worth it? Well an important thing is the price. While Apple hasn’t announced the price, most researchers say that the update will be the same price as Mac OS X 10.8, at $30.00, and will need to be downloaded via the Mac App Store. Considering the amount of features in Mountain Lion, the price is not that high. However, I recommend not buying it the day it comes out, but to wait a few days and read the reviews online before purchasing Mountain Lion. Also, make sure that your computer is able to run Mac OS X 10.8, because this update has reduced the number of older computers able to run Mountain Lion. In the end, I think Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion is a great update that has a lot of great features that will be very useful to all Mac users, including students.
