5 Ways to Network for a New Job

Networking for a job has taken on a whole new meaning since Social Media has become more and more prevalent in the world. That being said, there are still some old techniques for networking for a job that still ring true. The best thing to do these days is to combine some of the old with some of the new in an attempt to network for a job the best ways possible. Here are 5 ways to network for a job if you’re a recent college graduate

References and Contacts

One of the best ways to network for a job, especially at the beginning, is to gather up all your references and contacts from the past and get in touch with them. It doesn’t just have to be relatives either, It could be an old football coach or your high school drama teacher. Think of anyone you’ve had a great relationship with in the past who may be able to help you out through their connections. Let them know you are on the market for a new job and that if they hear about anything relevant to what you are looking for please contact you. For most people, references and contacts will be people you can trust, and this gives you an outlet for help, as there will be several people on the lookout for a job for you.

Update and Network Resume

Whether you are applying for a new job or a first job, your resume is very important, even in the technologically advanced community we live in these days. While the techniques for getting your resume out there may be somewhat different, the fact that you need a solid resume with certain keywords is still the same. A good resume will get you a lot more interviews than no resume will.

Social Media

Make sure all of your Social Media outlets have updates on them that tell your friends, family and acquaintances that you are on the market for a job. This will allow the word to get out through your friends, your friend’s friends, and beyond… you get the point. Social Media is a very powerful tool for networking so use it. Not only will you get the word out fast, but thousands of people could see your update if handled correctly.

LinkedIn

While technically LinkedIn could have been covered under Social Media, the fact of the matter is that when networking for a new job LinkedIn should be one of the first moves you make. LinkedIn is not only a social networking site, but it is a social networking site for professionals who are looking to connect with other professionals. Better yet, it is a website that allows you to post your resume and build a profile based on what type of work you are looking for. The network is huge and everyone who is looking for a job should have a profile on here.

Job Fairs

Try to make it to each and every job fair that is close to you. There are always great companies looking for employees and these job fairs are a great pace to meet new contacts and try for desired positions.
